Something I learned from visiting Beyondia International School Yamata Kindergarten.

I had a chance to attend the workshop of Dianne Sensei, a Senzonzoku College of Music professor for Musical Performance.

I realize that Musical or Play was very important of language and discipline education among the international schools and may be far important than IB or other activities they have in the international school curriculum and very good topic to study for Content and Language Integrated Learning which is spreading in Europe and now in Japan.

 October 18, 2026

Dear Ryan and Friends

I went to Yokohama Christ Church and found out that I am listed as one of the sick persons

to be prayed during the service. I had a leg injury and took several months to be healed and was on the list of prayer.

I mentioned to my Keio University professor at the service that I missed this summer lessons at Hiyoshi. I said my fear is that I don't have the drive to return to studies.  I mentioned that Keio and other universities in Japan should be like Harvard have free online courses for people. He mentioned the president of Keio University is now also head of all private universities in Japan. I do hope they will upgrade the " correspondence courses" to the level of the USA universities.  I said I might consider attending Harvard instead of Keio. He said MIT stated this free online course and now Harvard and the others have it too. I checked and found out they do have and plus Johns Hopkins too.  Now I realize what the writer in Japan said to the Junior High School students visiting Ogata Kouan 's house now run by the University of Osaka that it is very important to learn English today because the information you receive from Google in English is far more than in Japanese and it is true also with university studies

 October 17, 2026

A thought of a day.

There are two big groups influencing Yokohama world as my daughter said and I think so too.

One is the Port group港湾, port authority and teamsters. And the mayor who was elected and resigned is backed by the group.

The other is by Chamber of Commerce group like Art Jewelry/Bashamichi, Yokohama Rotary Club, Chikazawa/Motomachi,Kiyouken, Yuurindou, and shop owners and people gather around the New Grand Hotel They are for the bright lady highly educated woman.

Let's see who will be chosen this time.

Some thoughts of a day

I went to Yokohama International School in Honmoku, actually it is in Kominato.  I could see many students walking from bus stops and neighborhood. That was the initially idea the Yokohama City had in mind when the Honmoku Area was returned to Japan from the long occupation by the American Armed Forces.  It took thirty years from YIS has come from Yamate.  I tried to see Darren in charge of YIS but the security was tight and it was hard to go through their rituals of entrance. I find similar thing happening in the Australian Embassy and most probably others too.

I am bringing the Remembrance Day Poppy

Appeal materials to YIs and Beyondia International School.

Today was fine and rained and cloudy.

I met Rex on Friday and got some idea for the Canadian education. He mentioned that under the first Trudeau Prime minister, Canada made its policy change to multi-racial society and the red maple leaf flag. Ever since that time Canda's migration went up and Rex thinks it is beyond what they can hold.

Rex mentioned that the Chinese come with mother and kid to get education and father works in China to support them.  I heard the same thing happened in Korea about thirty years ago to the USA. Japanese migrated before the war and had a hard time during the Worl War II, so migration to both Canada and the USA are not likely popular like those days. Those days most of the Japanese were laborers like farmers or fishermen and today their children are professionals and would not like to do as their fathers, but Rex said there are about 100,000 Japanese descendants in Vancouver area.

Rex said that the elite education in Canada is getting expensive and Appleby College in Oakville Ontario costs Gade 7 and 8 Canadian$ 48,000 CDN, Garde 11 and 12 $58,000CDN        Upper Canada College where his daughter went in Toronto, Ontario is Domestic boarder $82,000 CDN and International boarder $89,000 CDN.

Canadian dollar is 85 cents to American dollar.

Some thoughts from a day

I was at the Alumni meeting on October 3, 2026

It was supposed to be a memorial day for the graduates of SJC/SJIS died, but the name of Pedro Guzon, Ippei Iwasaki was not there and some others too. I thought we had missed the list but I remember we told the person in charge. He is getting old and memory is fading. I think it could happen to me or others. I can't blame him.  I am wondering to continue studying in Keio but I may think it over. I will decide it in December or January.  We are getting old and the memory may fade as any other person.

Dear Friends A Blog a day

As my student, Ryan Tsai is writing his journal a day. I should also write a Blog or a Journal a day. I don't know I have a discipline to so. Let us see!   HAHAHA

I met Rex Thomson on Friday, October 9th at a Cafe near Naka Sports Center.    I have the idea that the international school should look more into Canada than the USA or Australia.     New Zealand is a nice country, but it is small. I am trying to get much more information on     Canada. I met a Canadian military Attache last year and found that he was very friendly and nice. Through him I had a chance to take the principal of Beyondia International School to the embassy and later to their library. I heard from the principal that there were many Chinese and Korean at the library. They are fast to learn anything good.

Right now, I am getting more information on Canada through Rex. He is my friend from Yokohama Christ Church, and his wife is a fourth-grade teacher at St. Maur International School. He is a financial planner from Canadian financial bank. His wife and he was at Bangalore, India before coming to Japan. She was teaching and administrating an international school in India and he was there, too.

The last St. Joseph School Festival

on September 27, Sunday at Tsurumi.

A Paradise Lost: St. Joseph School was kind not only to students but also to the teachers. They will be handed over to a "Cramming" school in Saitama, Kaichi and name will change and ending as a Catholic school.

According to a lady who is the 10th graduate of the school said that the Atonement Society is a Franciscan Society and not fit to run a school like Jesuits or Marianists.

They should have told the graduates that they are in financial difficulties.

I was a speech judge of the school for over thirty years, loved and respected their spirit. It is very unfortunate to see two St. Joseph schools had terminated. They had very good heart. I think that is the most important thing.

 September 21, 2026

A thought from an article of Dr. Hirotaka Joseph Takeuchi, NIKKEI, page 24 of September 7, 2026 on Japanese style education VS. international style education

" Don't have an education to make 忖度" in time of worldwide(global) playing field.

Japan has been low progress society for quite long but there are companies grew 400 times in 30 years.  That is UNIQLO. Mr. Yanai, CEO believes in challenge not "SONTAKU".

There are people saying in AI era we don't have to learn English.

About 70% of Harvard Business School graduates are now pursuing to be a Start Up proprietors. The most important thing for them is to convince the investors in the worldwide and their common language is English. We call it "Elevator pitch", in 15 seconds you must convince them to inves

t.

The reason why English became a common language is it is a language in "Black and White, a "direct language".  "Rhetorics" are important, but you must include humor in communication.

Is there a need to change the way you teach the English language asked by NIKKEI reporter and Dr. Takeuchi answered: " the schools have changed a lot compared to my young days.   "In my young days there were only very few international schools existed"(I want to add in 1965 there was only one international boy's high school to graduate in Japan, that was St. Joseph College, and he graduated with Summa Cum Laude from SJC). Dr. Takeuchi added " today there are over 100 international schools, though their tuitions may be high, but there are some schools with scholarships to accommodate the needs. They are the schools which can overcome the AI era and can acquire an English command to live through in challenging world." "Hope the Ministry of Education and parents understand the command of English needed in this global age."

(Dr. Takeuchi explains about the higher education, Harvard Business School, Liberal Arts, Hitotsubashi, and change going to happen in ICU education with Dorm system I will write later.)

A Blog/ A thought of a day

I heard from the head of Yokohama Christian School/Yokohama Union Church

that there will be an international school called Akiya-Hayama International School in 2028 or 2029.

They have recruited a principal and some other teachers from St. Maur International School and becoming a threat to the other international schools.

St. Maur incident

reminded me of a principal in Makahari International School whom Beyondia International CEO had a chance of meeting at their school and was a principal of St. Maur middle school for 6 years before becoming a principal of Makuhari International.  One of the leading teachers at the Horizon International School whom I think is a good teacher and helped the Horizon International School and previous Shinagawa International School to be successful international schools was a mathematics/science teacher for many years at St. Maur. I am not really sure why St. Maur International School is a good place to recruit good teachers, but I guess it is a discipline education you learn and acquire in the strict style Catholic schools like Eiko, Futaba, Sacred Heart, Gyosei, or St. Joseph College make a disciplined teacher which the society wants. St. Joseph College provided good teachers to ASIJ, YIS and other schools so as Gyosei Kokusai. I think the major reason is the pay of Christian international schools are far cheaper compared to others.

I have read about Akiya-Hayama International School in Nikkei several months ago as an ICHIJOUKOU dorm facility sponsored by a  Gakkouhoujin and a Fund and will start an international school in a beautiful Hayama/Yokosuka Nagai area near prefectural research dorm facility area. Asuka Sensei of Beyondia International principal at that time asked me where  can you get the teachers and students in such a remote place and I remember answering that it is very easy to recruit housewives from Yokosuka base and I mentioned that the reason they are building it is for Mr. Koizumi family and well to do people in Hayama-Kamakura-Tokyo area.

September 9/10/11/12, 2026 国際教育研究所 aiinstitute@gmail.com Finally I can be out of long leg injury

 September 9/10/11/12, 2026

Dear Friends

Finally, after July 20th leg injury, spending more than a month with weekly Keiyu Hospital, run by the police and Keio U. Medical School, I can be close to a normal life.

I went to Beyondia International School Headquarters at Higashi Yamata on 11 of September and met Yayoi Sensei and Nishiyama Sensei and talked about their primary school, Canadian education and St. Joseph School in Tsurumi and St. Maur visit and Yokohama Yamate area visits and embassy visits and also about Yamata's Dianne Sensei's workshop and online school discussions.

This was a long overdue visit which should have taken in July, and it was my first public visit since then.

This summer I could not visit Keio University/sessions due to my leg injury.

I think it is sad that I could not be there after 20 years of consecutive attendance. Most probably I will concentrate in their studies and can improve Japanese to March 2027and eventually take courses in Harvard and Tsukuba affiliated university.

I missed so much this summer, but it may lead to better solution in my future studies

However, I hope to catch up this fall to spring and be able to write my thesis.

 July 11, 2026

I went to L'Etoile du Matin Alumni mass served for the graduates who died in 2026.

I was told by Brother Paul Beckermann that St. Joseph College is not a sister school of Gyosei but a daughter school branched off from Gyosei in 1901 for the foreigners who did not like Yamagata Aritomo's idea of forcing all secondary school students in Japan to adopt ROTC/GUNJI KYOUREN.

L'Etoile du Matin was founded by the followers of Father Chaminade who founded the Society of Mary in France under the French Revolution.  They were sent to Japan in 1888

to find a Primary and Secondary school in Tokyo. Ever since that time they were the only Catholic Boys School until the Jesuit came in 1913 to have a higher education for the Catholics in Japan. This tradition is strongly observed and when Salesian started to have their school in Tokyo after the war, the archbishop of Tokyo did not recognize their school and chapel for many years.  I was told there are only two strictly Boys primary schools in Tokyo

, one is Gyosei Gakuen, a Catholic boy's school and the other is Rikkyo Boys school by the Anglican church. Most of the other Christian/Catholic schools are either for girls or coed.

July 7/8, 2026 aiinstitute@gmail.com 国際教育研究所 meeting with Nishikawa Sempai, SJC '59

 July 7, 2026

I met Mr. Shingo Nishikawa, Saint Joseph College graduate of 1959.

He was born in Nagoya, 1942 under a Japanese American who returned to Japan to receive Waseda University education but could not return to the USA because of the break of the war. The house was bombed so the family had to evacuate to the mother's countryside in Mie. His grandfather went to the USA to be a farm laborer in 1900 and became a wealthy farmer with many employees and became very wealthy but the anti-Asian/Japanese feeling and the law preventing Japanese to own land or emigrant made the situation hard. It became worse by the break of the World War II with the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor.    He lost everything. In the meantime, Shingo's father was sent to Japan to get a good Japanese education. With the break of War, Shingo was both American by birth and registered in Japanese Consulate in San Francisco with other employees of his father as a Japanese (KOSEKI). Shingo's father was called into a Japanese military but because of his health he was not drafted but joined the factory workers.   The war ended as the USA victory and Shingo's father was on the victor's side. He had lucrative jobs but stated his own business but was not a businessman and lost money at the end.                                              Shingo went to a Japanese school as many did to 4th grade and joined St. Joseph College where he met many who had various backgrounds and Brother Soden and other Brothers of Marianist Society. He said nobody asked their friends background but knew they were from all kinds of people and nationalities. He said that his father was not a businessman so lost money and in his 8th grade he felt he could not afford the school tuition but somehow managed with others help. He became a Catholic in the 6th grade with Father Gerber's baptism.  He went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the Electric Engineer because he felt he can get the job anytime when the situation is bad. He supported his sister in Saint Maur to graduate. He worked in the American rocket project when the USA was hurrying to catch up to the Soviet Union Sputnik and later in ATT and others.  He was told by his uncle and others not to outstand in WASP society and keep the low posture always as a Japanese American. They learned hard way through "Internment Camp" and losing everything in the "white" American society. He then decided to be a "teacher" which was always his dream. He went to graduate schools and got his first job in Hong Kong University and later in "emerging" Chinese universities and in 2004 Akita International University which is well known few all-English university we have in Japan.  It was one of the early ones sponsored by the prefecture. I heard from mentor who used to set up the university that the students must go abroad to earn credits abroad but most of the students fail, but he said in the early stage it was, but now it not. They do well and get good jobs.      He said most of the teachers/professors from abroad comes but not learning or have the background in Japanese. He asked them why and they said Japanese is only used in Japan, but you can use Chinese in Taiwan, Singapore and many countries outside China. So, they study Chinese but not Japanese. Let's face this reality!

 June 21, 2026

It was my first experience to attend Yamakita/Ashigara Internment Camp memorial service where some of our St. Joseph, a Marianist School, grads were put into hard life during 1942 to 1945 war time. It was strangely St. Joseph/Marianists summer house turned into Kanagawa prefectural internment camp. I asked the Royal British Legion to dedicate the wreath for them. I met 1971 St. Joseph College graduate who walks every year to this distant site from a station. It takes 1 and half hours walk from the nearest station to this mountain site.     I am very amazed and respect him for doing it.  He said he wants to feel how hard it was for his grandfather. Mr. Isaka, now a Japanese citizen, have three brothers graduating St. Joseph College in 1970's.  I will tell this to the Marianist schools and friends to remember it.
