Dear Friends and Students
I went two Churches today. One is a Quaker meeting and the other Anglican Christmas service. One was a quiet meeting but today we had two people inspired and stood up and talked. The first was about a person who went to legal registration of the Religious Organization and met a clerk who had a good view of the Christians because when she travel the Eastern Europe the nuns were very kind to her and left good inspiration of Christians to her.
The other was very interesting to understand why Quakers behave that way and what is the principle of Quakers. Our leader this year and long time religion teacher of Furendo Gakuen stood up and talked about Mary(Maria). Usually this time of season , they will talk about the birth and how people are waiting for Mary with a new born king.
But she talked about how people in Israel told Mary that they were disappointed with him not saving them but being crucified and did nothing what he was talking or promised.
Mary was not totally disappointed with what happen. She thought of the days her son, Jesus preached and shared his thoughts and lived together and inspired many when he was in Galilee.
When thinking of the days in Galilee, Jesus, her son, had inspired so many people and there were followers followed his preaching/teaching and led vigorously followed his compassionate lives.
I can't totally express what came into my thoughts today, that is why it is in our inner spirit rather than verbalized expression what matters.
At 6 o'clock I visited the Anglican Christmas held every year at this time because many foreign families will go back to their home countries.
It was a solemn mass with beautifully arranged choir singing and short sermon given by multi racial members.
The whole thing is well done. Rev. or Father Andrew, a young single Englishman did very well and the whole setting was superb and I think it is the best in Bluff, Yokohama.
I don't know why Japanese keep St. Andrew's Cathedral as their diocese head church.
The whole setting of the mass is to prepare people for the birth of Jesus Christ, savior and king to bed born, with the impressive candle lighting being lit by the altar boys and beautiful voice of choirs with the Reverend conducting it. You feel the organized and calmness of the church of England residing over us.

I went to St. Andrew's Cathedral on Saturday for the Anglican commemorating 130th yea.
I heard they are Anglican, Church of England, and surprisingly very influential group called Episcopal Church in the USA. I was told by many I fit this group not the Religious Organization of Friends. So I was curious and attended their Sunday in Christ Church Yamate, both English and Japanese and the cathedral on Saturday.
I found out they are very closed group and the new comers had a hard time befriending them.
Buddhism in Japan is obliged membership and for many years you had to have your temple or you can not even die.
Christians were persecuted for hundred of years and spread among the Samurai classes of the eastern Japan. So they carry arrogant silent way of running their churches. Anglicans or Seikeokai in Japanese is the best among the arrogant Japanese Christian carrying the English class arrogance. They claim they are Protestants with the Catholic rituals, mixed of the two.
I think I belong to the Religious Organization of Friends, Zen-Christian, very liberal group and the most democratic group.
Whatever it is , it is the matter of our Inner Voice.

The first part will be on the blog(the mssage to friends)
The second part is messages to the university students.
The Blog: On Sunday I went up to Yokohama Union Church to help the fellowship. I met Anna reading outside in church's bench. I asked why she was outside. She mentioned there are thre or four Sunday School teachers but only one student. She said,"there are too many teachers but only one student, so I don't want to get in."
I said,"there was a Brother in St. Joseph International School who came to study the existence of school said the reason why St. Joseph had a problem was there were too many chiefs, no Indians"
I felt this may be true with this Sunday School and hope not with the church.
To students of Aoyama, keep on working with your assigned work.
To Ikuta students: get your text work; do your assignment on speaking. We should cover four pages or more each time.
To Ferris students of Monday: we will cover one unit in two weeks. You should write journals every week and write it down in B5 notebook, and exchange your conversations with your partners, and hand in your notebook and exchange with the previous week notebook.

September 14, 2015: Atsuto's dream came true; his third time challenge to be a pilot.
September 14, 2015
Dear students and friends
First time I met Atsuto was after I successfully taught his sister attending Yokohama Futaba
to enter Keio University Engineering Department. He just entered Keio University Futsubu
(junior high school). He was a Keio gentleman and outstanding student and a tennis player.
I had many outstanding students from Japanese elite schools but he was far outstanding from them. He, then, entered Keio Jukukou(high school) with some other students I had. He was a good tennis player and a good student. As a Keio student he had a choice of department to enter in university to follow. He could have entered the Medical department, but entered the Engineering department because he wanted to be a pilot, he also joined the varsity team of Keio Tennis Club where he had to wear black school uniform all the time.
He graduated with cum laude and took the test of joining ANA as a pilot and unexpectedly failed
in the first primary.
At that time I was teaching a Sacred Heart student whose father was a 40 year-old ANA pilot and mentioned about Atsuto's failure and I was told that in 20 minutes any veteran pilot can tell the candidate's talent. I knew his statement was true from my experience as an English speech contest examiner. So I felt Atsuto may not fit to be a pilot, but his dream since his childhood or from his mother's, being living right next to Nagoya airport at Komaki and as a childhood Atsuto always saw airplanes flying over his grandfather's house, always wanted to be a pilot. He never changed his dream.
He joined the graduate school and prepared to be a pilot again.
I always supported him with supplying all the English materials need to be one.
This time he was careful, so he applied to Chiyoda Engineering company where most of new members were highly educated engineers from graduate schools who loved backpacking adventures.
He was able to go through screening to more advanced levels but failed again. His father was one of the high level directors of ANA but could not join them. He told me in ANA, unusual like JAL, they don't like a company contact to affect the choice and purposely they reject the company affiliated candidates.
So I thought he would join Chiyoda Engineering and will go to one of the plants in deserts.
However, I learned that he got in to the only pilot training school, Nippon Airline College.
He spent two years and got a license and became a pilot.
He was lucky to become a pilot when the world needed badly compare to first trial when JAL
became bankrupted and many pilots were laid off.
Today I heard from Atsuto that he got in to ANA.
I admire his perseverance, dedication, and commitment.

Dear Friends and Students
Today I went up to Keio Mita Campus to study Psychology and Sociology.
The class starts at 8:45 and ends 5:15. On the way back I took a classmate to Friends Center.
I remember the Religious Organization of Friends were saying that they have some difficulties in putting the dormitory with people. I always said Keio summer students will be happy to board, so took one from Saga, Kyushu. I think they will be more than happy to stay in the Important Cultural building from 1922 and where the present emperor visited to see his tutor.

I started the last week of Keio University Summer Session with Psychology and Sociology.
I put one whole day writing my life history with 5, 000 words Japanese yesterday. I thought most students will have their homework. On the contrary I was the only one who brought the paper.
I was surprised the others didn't. The professors were quite interesting character, one young professor spoke about his difficulties being a gay and spoke about high rate of suicide exist in the Ministry of Social Welfare and Labor where he was a young high ranking bureaucrat before switch to the study of Sociology. The other professor just returned from his trip to Germany.
He was like a Steve Jobs type of speaker. He had a good command of speaking and communication with audience.

Dear Friends and Students
Today I finished my second group of Exams for my summer sessions of Keio University at Hiyoshi.
My first Exam was on the Japanese Legal history from Ritsuyo(Chinese T'ang dynasty laws imported to Japan)to Meiji Japanese Westernization. The amazing part of this legal structure was that it was almost perfect and detailed legal system. No wonder the East Asia was ahead of all for 2,000 years and was hard to revise it in the 19th century to the Western legal system in China, Korea or Japan.
The second Exam was the Medieval European History. It was extreme comparison with the first class as to see how much Europe was behind Islam or Constantinople or much further behind China for a thousand years legal structure , economy, or in civilization. The only development took place is the Christian monastery and its influence upon people.

Dear Friends and Students
Today, August 15, 2015 is the ending of World War !! for Japanese. That is the Japanese interpretation but most considered September 2, 1945 because that is the day the Japanese signed the surrendering of the war.
The war is still every where in this world. Japanese had 70 years of peace from the end of the past war. I still don't know why we start war and why keep continue fighting.
Today I had the Japanese legal history. I learned Kamakura legal structure and the importance of land to Japanese Samurai, warriors; due to their strong attachment to land so the most importance legal judgement for the Kamakura Shogunate is to solve the disputes over the land ownership among their Samurais(warriors).
European medieval history was concentrated with city development of 11th century and monastery development in Europe.
I learned how Franciscan started and develop into an Order with Dominicans and two others.
I have to write 3000 to 5000 words autobiographical Japanese report on Sociology class before the class starts next Wednesday. So I will start soon on that.

Today I had two classes in Keio, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
The legal history of Japan was interesting class where he starts with several pages of hand outs
and amazingly fast class with a lot of information without any breaks for 105 minutes.
I was amazed with the legal structure and highly educated bureaucrats in early Japan going back to Nara period(800 AD). If you compare with the Medieval Europe I am taking in the afternoon.
So East Asia was far advanced until 18th century.

We had rain this morning and cooling the temperature in this area.
I am sure we still have a higher temperature day coming yet but I remember
when I was a Boy Scout I heard from scouts from Hokkaido that when the camp is over
in mid-August, they will need stove when they returned to Hokkaido.
My friends in Myanmar and Singapore always say they envy Japanese for their autumn, cooling of hot summer and have a present air condition type of weather in September, October and November.
I still take two courses in Keio right now. I learned that Japanese desperately imported the Chinese legal system in 800 AD and learned that Otto the Great of Holy Roman Empire
imposed the Vatican to have a celibacy. Popes of Rome were considered one of Bishops and marriages were their choices to have or not and it was a family business for many of them.
Many of what we know paintings of medieval time is propaganda of Church or regimes of that time.

Dear Students and Friends
I am going to restart the Blog.
I was supposed to be writing the Blog daily to the students to guide them and give them what they should do for homework.
I was not as easy as I thought I could initially do it.
However, with an encouragement and a gift of Air Mac from the Most Respectable Sir Kermit Carvell, I think he deserves to be given a title, I am trying to restart writing this Blog.
There should be some kind of division of Blogs with other two Blogs. However, at the moment I will try with this for a month or so.
Today I took the Legal history of Japan and Medieval European History at Keio University Hiyoshi.
I start from 8:45 and ends at 5:30 pm, of course there is a lunch break.
I found out that Hatoyama's great grandfather went to Columbia and Yale with Ph. D. in law
after the initial education at Tokyo Imperial University in 1870's to 1880's. His American university education gave him a chance of getting the first law professorship at Tokyo Imperial University,
but he had a fight with the administration and became the first Japanese lawyer.
If he had stayed in the university , Japanese legal structure will be completely different with what we have today which is basically based on the German legal structure. It would have been Anglo-American legal structure.
Remember Japanese put a lot of money and energy in educating their young elite to modernize when other Asians were not interested yet.
And I see many of these young elites were extremely intelligent and mastered the language and mastered the knowledge abroad in surprisingly short time.

Today we did Chapter ten, Food section, with reading Chapter Ten, Food.
We gave Newspaper to cut and paste the article and read it and summarize it.
I must ask you to summarize and present on the news PR.
The final week, we would have to ask you to have Opinion or reaction on Mr. Abe's speech
at the USA Congress. Plus there is a substitution day on July 21st.
We had a test in Humanities College, so we were able to report on Mr. Abe's speech and the other speech on the twelve presentation topic.

Hope all are doing fine.
What we did today is to start with Unit 6 "Heroes". We started with what do you mean by Heroes.
I showed them an example from "Legally Blonde" MGM film about a girl from Los Angeles going to Harvard Law School with comedy touch.
We listened to two sections of Unit 6. One is what is the common pattern for Heroes.
The second is Harry Potter as an example of this Hero concept of the previous section.
I would ask you to use two topics for the Journal.
Our final test will be on 22, July, Wednesday: Write your opinion and reaction toward Mr. Abe's speech at the USA Congress.
Good day
Good luck

Dear Students and Friends
This week was extremely busy with couple events that took place starting from Saturday of the previous week.
I had a class in Ikuta and went back in the afternoon to Yokohama Kanagawaku to meet my previous student who entered Tokyo University of Science, one of the leading science universities in Japan. I recall what he said was my English program helped him to enter and he is grateful for that and most science universities first year fee was about 1.5 million yen except St. Paul(Rikkyo) is 200,000 yen higher and the national university fee was lower but you need Math, English, science, Japanese and social studies(5 subjects)exam to enter.
After meeting him, I went to Takanawa, Tokyo for the afternoon tea meeting at the Friend Center, an accommodation for the Friends to stay, to meet a family from the Ohio Valley Friends and a couple from Canada being a principal in Tokyo for an international school operating in Suginami, Tokyo by Bunka Gakuen to be the first dual diploma school with the Japanese government accredited and British Columbia accredited school. they are both very gentle and nice. The wife is an ordained minister of the United Church of Canada(like Japanese, Nihon Kirisuto Kyuodan). She had an interesting remark on ministry of Presbyterians and of the Friends(Quakers). I learn a lot about the retired or intellectual ministers choice of Friends.
Monday I went up to Kisarazu to meet Fr. Tagawa, SM.
He is a builder and giant builder of the Marianist schools.
Most of schools we see in Japan by Marianists were built by him. Only problem is he doesn't stop. He is 90, but still thinking of building a new elementary school at Nagareyama, Chiba near Tsukuba. He mentioned his problem that took place recently between him and Assistant Principal of his elementary school. It went to a law suit between the two. I listened to his agony and anger including a leader in Catholic schools organization with the support of Archbishop of Tokyo/Chiba
was sent to replace him. The trouble is that school is his school and he solely built with his hard work and donations of his contact and nobody else. I recommended a very nice and devout Catholic, Ph. D. dedicated his life to the school to be the leader of the school but he refused.
I always wanted that school to be the second St. Joseph College and put my dreams for many year with association with him, but I think his interest is putting people to Tokyo University and building forever. He mentioned how great Jesuits are how great Seiko Gakuen, Yokohama building and entrance examination to universities are. I think there is more than that. Something of heart, something of spirit must be there. I left Gyosei International School with despair and disappointment and something I can not express; beyond I have to seek or find my new or detour path taking ahead and don't know how to express and feel sad for those on the board of that huge ship with 65,000 tsubo or 180,000 sq. m. of Campus that is cruising with a leadership of one man only.

1) Listening class should concentrate on Reallyenglish to be completed with a certificate and to work on itinerary of travel. 2) Core should do pages on Tastes and preferences section with Unit 6 exercises.
Remember the Journal and News discussion should be due on July 10.
July 17 is the final day for all Friday classes, so there will be a listening test and Book Report for the Core class.
Remember the ending of classes is coming up.
Good luck and keep on studying.

Dear Students and Friends
It is almost a month since I stop writing a Blog.
I will resume the Blog to the students and friends.
I will divide the blog into two sections.
One will be messages to the students for the suggestions for their work.
Two will be a regular messages to the friends and all.
1)For Ferris students of Wednesday:
Look at page 100 and choose a type of public transportation that you know well.
List all of the rules that you can think of
1. City
2. Type of transportation
3) Rules of Etiquette
in about 50 to 100 words.
2)I went to Gyosei International school to meet the owner/principal of the school.
He explained how he started the school even though all the Brothers of Marianists were against the idea and wrote the petition to the Archbishop Shirayanagi in 1980's. He heard the news of money was there for the returnees from abroad(350,000,000 yen) by the Japanese government to be educated in secondary schools in Japan. He searched all over Kanto area for a land and found it in Kisarazu, Chiba without any road or infrastructure. He built and started and I think it was a success except his venture to start the first secondary school abroad for Japan in England.
He is a builder, he never ends building. Even today at the age of over 90 he is dreaming of building a new elementary school in Nagareyama, Chiba. I think he will do it.
However, I think Japan is in the middle of dream of growing. I hope this mid-summer night dream will last for a while in this country, but I think people will wake up from this dream and see the reality.
That is time we really see the future of this country or education system will be tested.

I drove to his house in Sakae ward of Yokohama and pick him up and returned home.
He was playing games by himself but got bored easily, so took him to walk with our dog, "Peace"
We have three major parks in very close by, but I never took a walk to these parks for at least three years because my Shiba dog was too old and sick.
It was a wonderful day to take them to walk.
Returned he wanted to learn Math but I had no Math drill book to provide him with, so taught English with the "drills" I had. He did well. He has a good concentration skill.
Hope you have a chance to write on your daily lives or think about your elementary school days.

Today I met a professor of Christian Culture,
Professor Takeda at Aoyama U.
It was interesting and refreshing to listen to his conversation.
He is a graduate of ICU and became Roman Catholic by being baptized in
Sankenjaya Catholic Church instead of Protestant of ICU. He later went to Kyoto U.
and Oxford. He is expert in Christian history and philosophy.
He is a lay member of Franciscan Friary. I did not know such thing existed.
Franciscan is extremely known for poverty. They live like beggars without owning anything
but the monasteries are erected in the middle of cities. This is by their choice.
I find out the wealthiest person in this earth is one who can refuse worldly materials and
live without attachment to it.
